How I started Out Making Beats

If you have been reading more of my blogs, then you probably know, that I started out as a rapper, and I was rapping to other producers beats, but I soon realized, that I wanted to make my own beats, that were in the right style for my style of rapping. So around half a year with rapping, I went out and invested in a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation – With other words: A music program), I bought myself a keyboard and an audio device, and was ready to start producing my own beats. I sat almost 24/7 practiced and practiced. I learned different scales on the keyboard. I have to admit, that when I look back on the beats I made in the beginning, they sucked big time! Haha… But everything has a beginning, and now 5 years later I am making dope beats and construction kits to other rappers and producers. It’s going well with the evolving of my music production. So my point for you dear reader is, that no matter how bad your beats sounds in the beginning of your music career, you gotta keep going and never stop making music/beats, cause you WILL GET THERE SOONER OR LATER! Trust me! And lucky for you, I have some tips and tricks and websites, that can help you out producing beats. So keep reading… Let’s move on to the next subject!

Construction & Drum Kits

In the beginning, I bought a lot of construction kits. These kits contained 5 different beats, that I could put together in the way I wanted to. And the kits were 100 % ROYALTY FREE, which means that I could sell the beats, without checking, if they were legal for me to sell, and nobody could come knocking on my door, and say, that they got the rights to my beats. So these construction kits/drum kits were a great kickstarter for my music production. If you’re just starting out making music, and you think you can’t make them dope beats, then I encourage you to buy some construction kits to get you started and from there just be creative. Below you can see of the construction kits, that I have made, after I have evolved my production, and now instead of BUYING kits, I’m now SELLING kits:

If you want to check out my construction kits, and/or support me, then you can buy these kits by clicking here. You can also just go to google and search for “Construction kits”, and then a lot of websites show up, where there are a lot of construction kits. Okay… Moving on.

VST Instruments

If you’re a little bit more experienced beatmaker/producer, then instead of buying construction kits, then VST instruments are maybe the way to go for you, cause when you buy VST instruments, you increase your sound library. I always keep myself updated with new VST instruments, and I buy a lot of VST instruments to increase my sound arsenal. You can never get enough sounds. You have to think like this: Every time you buy a VST instrument, it’s an investment in your business. Maybe it’s money out of your pocket, when you buy those VST’s, but in the long run you will say to yourself: “It was great that I invested in that VST”. I will not talk too much about this subject, so I suggest after reading this blog, you should go and google “VST instruments”, and check out some different websites. And when you find some great websites, then you should subscribe to their newsletter, so every time they have an update about a new VST or any other product, then you get informed right away with an email in your inbox. Cool…Next subject.

Piano/Keyboard Lessons

Now we have talked about construction kits and VST’s. But… What about what you have to do, with these VST’s of yours? Now when you have invested in a VST, then you also have to be able to play with it. And since this blog is aimed towards new beatmakers/producers, then I assume that you can’t play piano or keyboard. This is the tough part of music production. If you want to learn to play piano/keyboard, then I suggest you start asap! The thing I did was to contact a professional piano player, who now is teaching other people to play piano. I learned the basics skills when it comes to playing piano. After that I was practicing on my own. When I make beats I also do by listening. When I sit at the keyboard, then I can hear what scales sound great, and what scales sound horrible. If you don’t want to pay a teacher to teach you how to play piano/keyboard, then you can just go to YouTube, and write: “Learn to play piano” or “Learn to play keyboard”. When you do that, a ton of videos pop up in a split second. If you are serious about your music career, then you HAVE TO DO ONE OF THESE TWO THINGS, unless you are a genious and nature talent and can learn it by yourself…Okay, moving on to the last subject.

Practice, Practice, Practice!

When you think that you have gotten enough piano/keyboard lessons, then you have to practice! A lot! Practice makes perfect, so… Practice, practice and practice! At some point you will transform from a total newbie to a ninja on a keyboard. It’s like learning to ride a bycicle. It’s hard to learn, but when you have learned it, then you’ll master it for life! Let’s say you start from scratch with beatmaking, then you: try to make some beats, maybe they don’t sound that great. Then you decide to buy some 100 % ROYALT FREE construction kits for a few bucks. You make some beats with them. Then afterwards you want to take your production to the next level, and decide to invest in some VST’s. Then you contact a piano teacher and get some lessons from him/her. After that you decide to stop paying for lessons, and want to practice on your own. When you practice, then don’t stop. Cause you will learn more and more throughout your entire career. Sooner or later, artists contact you, because they think you’re an awesome producer, and want to make singles, EP’s and maybe even albums together with you. That was and still is the case with my career as a music producer. So to sum up: All the subjects in this blog can be put down to a few words: Keep practicing, keep learning and keep evolving your music skills, and invest in your business! Do these things, and in the end you will be on the way to an awesome career as a music producer!
