How To Become A Better Rapper!
Hey You All!
Today I wanna talk to you about rap, getting better at rapping, and what separates the superstars from the rest of the competition (here I am talking about lifestory, and the thing, that is the most important: YOU HAVE TO BE REAL!) In this Blog there are 5 things, which make you better than the rest of the rappers, and how you with both talent, hard work and maybe some luck can go very far in the music industry! The 5 things, which I will talk to you about is the following:
– Always Find New Words, Phrases & Rhymes. Getting inspiration From Other Rappers.
– Find Your Own Style (Both Rapping Style, But Also Beat Style).
– Find A Good Producer, Who Can Make You The Style Of Beat, That You’re Looking For.
Before I tell you the 5 things, which I mean are very important to know if you wanna become a better rapper, then I would like you to see the YouTube video with Eminem, where he tells about how he became famous. In this way, you get an idea about, what to do, and how to do it, cause obviously he knows what he is talking about! Check out the video to see and hear for yourself, what he says.
Okay, let’s go straight to the five things I wanna talk to you about today, so you can become a better rapper in no time!
“If you wanna be the best, then you have to beat the best”… I have heard that phrase a million times. But you know what? It could not be more correct and well said, than it is. I know that it’s maybe a tough job to beat Eminiem, Dr. Dre or The Game. But there is one thing, which is not that tough… And that is practicing your skills. And with this I DO NOT MEAN JUST A LITTLE PRACTICING HERE AND THERE!!! No, No, Noooo… If you have these thoughts, with just a little practicing, then you are DEAD WRONG! If you wanna be good at the art at rapping, then you have to commit yourself to this game a 100%… Or maybe more! 200%… You get the idea. This also means, that there will come some days, where you think, that you just can’t write anything good, or you can’t find any new rhymes or punchlines. But when these days come to you, you have to be persistent and push yourself to the limit! I know how frustrating it is, when the lines and rhymes don’t just come to my head, and how it is to think, that you can’t find any words. But I also know, that by pushing myself to the limit has made me a better rapper, than I was 4 years ago. So remember, that you always have to practice your skills and the craft of rapping.
Always Find New Words, Phrases & Rhymes. Getting inspiration From Other Rappers.
Okay, moving on to the 2. subject. A good advice from me to you, when you just start out writing rap lyrics, then try and take a dictionary and just find some words, which make sence to you, and which you can use in a song. Then when you have chosen a word, then just sit back, and start thinking about words which have the same ending, and which rhymes to that word. Let me take an example… I have choosed the word “death row”… And now here are some words, which rhymes to that word: Low, glow, show, go, tomorrow, sorrow… And I could go on. Then the next thing, is putting phrases together in a way, that you think sounds cool. We could take the words and rhymes, which I mentioned above, and make it into a sentence. Okay, here we go…: “I sit here on the death row… Thinking about the long gone golden show! I think a lot about my victims, and I have regrets and sorrow… But I still hope, when my time comes tomorrow, that my spirit will take me to the skies, and let me glow!”.
Below, there is a song performed by me in english, which I made in the early start of my rap carrier… I am a Dane, so if it doesn’t sounds like an American rapper, then that’s why. But take a listen, and listen to the rhymes, and then you can hear what I mean. Enjoy!
You always have to come up with new rhymes, so you don’t get stuck in the same rhymes. Because you don’t wanna make ten songs, which all are saying the same rhymes in ten different ways, because nobody want to listen to that. So you have to evolve your words, rhymes and lines! Another way to find new words is to listen to other people’s songs, maybe your favourite rapper. In this way you can find the words, which you think could fit your rap style best, and then use them to your unique style. When I say, you can get inspiration from other people, then I don’t mean, that you should just be a copycat, and pretend that you’re somebody else, than you really are. But I think you know what I mean. Be yourself, but still get inspiration from somebody else. The most important thing is, that you’re real in your songs!
Find Your Own Style (Both Rapping Style, But Also Beat Style).
When it comes to style, then it’s important to know your tempo in your songs, the way the lines are told, and which attitude you got, when you’re rapping. Let me go more into depth with this. Okay… Let’s start with the tempo: When you are singing, then it’s important to be ON the beat, and when that’s said, then your style of tempo have to fit the beat. So if you are a fast rapper like let’s say Eminem, then you have to buy/make beats that have a high BPM (Beats Per Minute), because then the beat and your fast lyrics are fitting together. And this also goes the other way around… If you are a slow type of rapper, then you should look after beats with a low BPM. It’s pretty simple. When it comes to the “style of beat”, then you have to choose very carefully, when you buy/make beats. With this I mean, that if you’re a rapper, who are rapping about dark, sad, angry things, then there are styles of beats, that fits perfect to those things, but there are definitely also beats, which absolutely DON’T fit those things. Let me tell you some of the styles of beats, that are on the market today: Gangsta, Underground, Trap, Dirty South… These types (or genres), are perfect to rap lyrics, which are dark, sad, angry etc… If the rap lyrics are bright, fun, happy, smooth etc., then genres like R&B, Neo-Soul and Hip-Hop, are perfect to these rap lyrics.
Okay, listen… This subject is what separates the big time rappers from the rest of the game. I have the believe, that some people are put on this planet to perform/act/rap/sing. It’s just my personal believe, so this doesn’t have to be your believe, I’m just letting you know. When that’s said, then I want to let you decide yourself whether or not you are one of those people, who just have that special gift to for example rap like a superstar. If you don’t have that gift within you, then I have to tell you, that you have a lot of work in front of you on your way to become a great rapper. Sorry to say so, but it’s the truth… BUT! If you are one of those, who have that gift, then you are blessed from above, and can get very far in this industry. This doesn’t mean, that you don’t have to do all the other things, that are relevant in this Blog, cause you still have to do these things to stay ahead in the game, and move up into the “Big Boys League”. So remember always to keep practicing, evolve your rap skills etc. The song below this text is a perfect example on how unique a rapper can be with his very own style, tempo, “on-beat” and expression. Just by listening to his style, you can hear that he has practiced a lot, and has a ton of talent, when it comes to rap, writing lyrics and attitude, so you can just feel his professionalism. I have made the beat to this song, so take a listen and hear what I mean.
Find A Good Producer, Who Can Make You The Style Of Beat, That You’re Looking For.
When you have all the above mentioned things in place, then another and last thing in this Blog is important to your success in the music industry, and it’s as the header says to: “Find a good producer, who can make you the style of beat, that you’re looking for”. This is important, because of a lot of things. The first thing is, that when you’re new in this game, then you might not have a lot of money to buy beats, cause they can be expensive sometimes. Maybe you also don’t have enough money to go out and invest in a lot of new gear, such as a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), keyboard, monitors, external sound card etc… Another thing is, that the producer have to know how to make a good mixed and mastered beat, so your songs can be “radio ready”. And that’s is not cheap to get the songs mixed and mastered. So when you search the internet for beats to buy, then you have to listen to the beats, and decide if the beats are your style, how much they cost, if the producer mix and master songs, and what other services the producer offers. When you have chosen a “Go-To-Producer”, so to speak, then it’s a good thing to establish a good relationship with the producer, and negotiate about a thing like custom beats to an affordable price. And always remember to subscribe to the producers mailing list, so you are always updated with the latest beats, news and other services, that the producer are offering.
